The company was founded in September
1976 when the Sumlock/Rockwell Corporation decided to close it’s
European office equipment division. Five unemployed electronic engineers
who previously worked at the North London branch felt it might be a good
idea to put their redundancy money into a new company to take over
what was left of the business and see what could be made of it. Faced
with an ever declining calculator repair market, the new company soon
expanded into repairing a whole range of electronic products.
1978 saw the launch in the UK, of the Commodore PET range of Personal
Computers and EGS was there at the beginning, being appointed the
seventh UK distributor of the product. This was a period of tremendous
growth
in the market, and faced with demand from the business sector, EGS
created a subsidiary company
Alpha Business Systems Ltd., to provide systems analysis services along
with installation, training and support
for a market which quickly took on board the new developments from
Commodore and two years later the new offering from IBM.
By 1980, EGS had also moved into the installation and repair of
Electronic Point of Sale Equipment, and in that
year was appointed Warranty Agents for the US manufactured POSITRAN Fast
Food POS system. This system soon became the market leader in the field
with customers such as Wimpy Hamburgers, Casey Jones, Quick,
and even McDonalds. Today, EGS continues to service a declining number
of POSITRAN Systems.
With sustained growth a need was soon felt for larger premises and in
1981 the company moved to its present home in Ware. The company has
continued to grow in a number of directions and now also services and
maintains a wide variety of P.C. based systems used in the Retail Trade.
These include price ticketing systems
as well as POS systems, and our national service team, coupled with our
independence as a company, has
helped us to secure further business with the leading Japanese
manufacturer CASIO.
Since January 1992, EGS has been providing Warranty Support on a range
of CASIO products. Our connection
with CASIO has made it possible for a large number of their VAR’s to
benefit from ‘Big Company’ support via ourselves without the tremendous
overheads it would otherwise entail.
In 1993 EGS were appointed distributors of the FASFAX (Geac) range of
POS systems manufactured in the
USA. We continue to provide Repair facilities for FASFAX systems
installed in Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Malta, Spain, Hungary and Poland as well as still maintaining a number
of systems installed in Burger King Restaurants in the United Kingdom
and Ireland.
Electrologics (now owned by Quikserve in Omaha) made EGS their European
distributors of the highly
successful “POS Works” range of POS Systems in 1998. We have installed
and continue to maintain over 120 of these systems within the Burger
King Franchise marketplace.
In addition to our wide experience in Quick Service POS systems, we are
also the European Agents for the ACCUVIEW Order Confirmation Displays
from Texas Digital Systems, Drive-Thru Timer Systems from Phase Research
and Servtronix, APG Cash Drawers from Minnesota and 3M Intercom Systems,
including their latest
XT-1 Digital System.
With our Repair Centres in Ware and Oldham along with Regional Service
Bases throughout the
United Kingdom, we offer a complete range of support services including
National Field Maintenance. It is our boast that, weather and traffic
permitting, no site in the UK is more than 3 hours from one of our
Regional
Service Centres.
